Menopause Management

At Hawthorn Medical and Wellness Hub, we offer a Menopause Health Assessment and can discuss personalized treatment options to address your concerns.

Menopause symptoms, driven by hormonal changes, usually emerge during perimenopause and may include hot flashes, night sweats, irregular periods, vaginal dryness, and sleep disturbances. Additional symptoms often experienced are weight gain, mood swings, fatigue, memory concerns, and reduced libido. These symptoms can persist for several years and vary from mild to severe.

Treatment Options

Menopausal Hormone Therapy (MHT/HRT)

  • Estrogen-only: Recommended for women who have undergone a hysterectomy.
  • Combined (Estrogen + Progestogen): Needed for women with a uterus to protect the uterine lining.
  • Tibolone: A synthetic steroid that helps treat symptoms, could be considered for low libido.

Non-Hormonal Treatment Options

  • Veoza (fezolinetant) is a non-hormonal, prescription medication (45mg tablet) approved to reduce moderate-to-severe menopause-related vasomotor symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats. It works by blocking neurokinin B (NKB) in the brain’s temperature regulation center and requires regular monitoring of liver function.
  • Antidepressants (SSRIs/SNRIs): These can help lessen hot flashes and stabilize mood swings.
  • Gabapentin: An anti-seizure medication that may reduce hot flashes.
  • Clonidine: A blood pressure medication that can sometimes be used for flushing.

Vaginal Treatments for Dryness

  • Low-dose vaginal estrogen: Offered as creams or pessaries to help relieve vaginal dryness.
  • Intrarosa (prasterone) is a non-estrogen vaginal pessary used to treat moderate-to-severe pain during intercourse and vaginal dryness associated with menopause. Prasterone (DHEA) is converted by vaginal cells into estrogen and testosterone locally, which helps rebuild tissue, restore healthy pH, and ease symptoms.
